How To Prevent Your Extensions From Tangling

Several factors can lead to your hair getting tangled regularly. Things like your hair's texture, how often you brush it, how much it's exposed to the wind, and its overall condition all play a role in how easily it mats.

Your hair is more prone to tangling if:

  • It's very dry or damaged
  • You skip brushing it during the day
  • You leave it loose while you sleep
  • You do not deep condition it often
  • You sweat on it often
  • You style your hair improperly

Our extensions are bleached at the factory level, and we do not apply silkening products such as keratin or silicones, which is why your extensions feel coarse and have a low luster. We chose this approach to help the extensions blend seamlessly with straightened textured hair.

Additionally, because part of the hair you purchased is lifted to the lightest blonde, it has undergone longer processing. The lightening process for our hair opens the cuticle, making it more vulnerable to dryness and tangling. Light and medium blonde hair loses moisture more quickly due to the open cuticles as well, thus increasing the need for delicate hair care. For this reason, we always make sure to include in our care instructions that those who invest in our extensions should be mindful of their care needs, as color treated hair extensions require professional products.

While there's no permanent solution to prevent tangles completely, there are steps you can take to reduce them and minimize the damage caused by detangling.

The outermost layer of a hair strand, called the cuticle, is a protective barrier of overlapping, scale-like cells. When the cuticle is smooth and flat, hair appears shiny, healthy, and tangle-free. Tangling is quite normal with bleached hair extensions but will be eliminated or reduced if you are following our care tips.

Tips for Eliminating Tangling

1. Wrap Your Hair at Night After Straightening

If you want to wear your hair straight, we recommend wrapping it at night (like you would wrap a silk press) right after straightening to give the cuticles a chance to rest and cool. If you are straightening your extensions on a hair extensions hanger, we recommend wrapping it around a silk scarf after.

2. Use an Anti-Frizz Treatment Before Styling

If you haven't done a glossing treatment in a while and want to style your hair and go out right after, we recommend the Color Wow Dream Coat Extra Strength Anti-Frizz Treatment. This will prevent the cuticles of your hair from lifting while straightening.

3. Skip the Rest Time When Curling

You do not have to let your hair rest if you are curling your hair. Simply heat style and go!

4. Deep Condition Regularly

Because our extensions are bleached, the cuticle is more open and prone to dryness. Deep conditioning at least once a week helps seal the cuticle, reduce friction between strands, and dramatically cut down on tangling.

5. Detangle Gently — Always From the Bottom Up

Use a wide-tooth comb or a paddle brush and always start detangling from the ends, working your way up to the roots. Never rip through knots from root to tip, as this causes breakage and worsens tangles over time.

6. Braid or Tie Your Hair Before Bed

Even if you've wrapped your hair, securing it in a loose braid or bun with a satin scrunchie before bed prevents friction and matting while you sleep.
